Obsessed!!!!

Last weekend we had a rockin' good time at the Outside Lands music festival. So many great bands performed, though we went specifically to see our new musical obsession, Bon Iver. Such ridiculously beautiful music, and they are amazing live. See for yourself here, at our other musical obsession, La Blogotheque, a video blog featuring "Takeaway Shows"—impromptu, casual, acoustic performances of all our favorite bands. The guy who does these, Vincent Moon, is a fantastic artist/videographer and we've lost many hours clicking around his site.

New Stuff, Old School

We recently added a bunch of great new items to the Shoppe (and there's a lot more still to come). One of our favorite new things is "Old School", the catalog for an amazing art show at the Uppercase Gallery which features gorgeous educational-themed work from a bunch of our favorite artists. Check it.

Watch this show

There is life after cable. We've been TV-free for a year now and although I still complain about how much I miss channel surfing, I have to say that when we do watch "TV" (on our computer), we watch much higher quality shows and it doesn't feel at all like wasted time. Recently we've been catching up on new episodes of 30 Days, full episodes of which are viewable on hulu.com.

Hosted and created by Morgan Spurlock, who made the documentary "Super Size Me" in 2004, it is an incredible show in which someone (sometimes Morgan, sometimes another willing volunteer) spends 30 days learning about and fully immersing themselves in a community or lifestyle that is completely different from their own. In the episode we watched last night, Morgan goes to live with a Native American family on a reservation. In another, he spends 30 days working in a coal mine in West Virginia. Watching these individuals learn about and struggle with different views and lifestyles makes for riveting television, and what they take away with them at the end of each episode is always relevatory. Watch and learn!

Paper Flowers

Thanks to Cindy from Skip to My Lou for inviting us to contribute a craft project to her Craft-a-Thon this week! She asked us to come up with a craft project inspired by one of our favorite children's books, so we chose the story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf.

Ferdinand's love of flowers inspired us to make this super simple tissue paper flower bouquet, which you can learn to make here.

Shoppe updates

Lots of the people who walk into our Shoppe ask if all the merchandise in our store is available on our website, and we'd love to say that 100% of it is... but the truth of the matter is that there is a huge box of items to photograph, write about, measure, weigh and post sitting in the back of our store. If all goes well, we will be posting 5-10 items a week from now until we're all caught up! Please check the "New" page on our site often- we've posted lots of great new stuff already this week! (You should also check out our SALE page for new markdowns!)

Reminder- weekend events at the shoppe

Just a reminder for those of you in the Bay Area to come to our next opening at the shoppe tomorrow evening. Mariah's photos are simply beautiful, and you have to see her window installations using old speakers that she fashioned into glowing lamps. Please join us for drinks and donut holes from 6-8 pm! (Gallery sneak peek below.)

********************************************

Also, Lea Redmond will be back on Saturday with her "World's Smallest Postal Service" from 2-6pm. If you weren't able to purchase a miniscule letter (complete with sealing wax and a magnifying glass!) from her last month, now's your chance!

Everything is OK

A couple weeks ago we received this mysterious can in the mail. Upon opening it, we found a roll of caution tape, some stickers, postcards, buttons and a link to follow to the everything is ok website. After reading up about the project, which began as an installation at the Pasadena Museum of California Art and the Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art, we decided to hang the caution tape in front of the shoppe after we closed up the following Sunday night.

By the next day we had a few phone calls from concerned friends and passers-by, (including our FedEx delivery person) and by mid-afternoon on Monday someone had taken it down, but we thought it was an interesting experiment and were happy to be involved! Click here to read more about the everything is ok activist kits.
