What we've been up to

Aside from our weekly photo assignments, we've been taking a bit of a hiatus from posting here at smartsandcrafts, which isn't to say we haven't been busy...

First, we made this video to accompany Derek's story about Conn & John's Maui abode.

We also took a trip to the Alemany Farmer's Market last weekend and picked up fruit to make yummy strawberry, apricot and plum jam with our friend Kate.

We sewed up some oilcloth lunch bags for this week's DIY Wednesday post over at design*sponge.

I started making a cut paper luminaria from a japanese craft book I picked up at Kinokuniya.

Finally, we've been hard at work over the past couple months on a super exciting book project, which involves much crafting, photographing and writing. More on this later- wish us luck as we spend the next few days finishing it up!

Neil Freese's Kaleidoscope Safari

Just wanted to give you a sneak peek at the art installation that is going up in the gallery- a mix of string art, collages and drawings by SF artist Neil Freese. (You can visit our flickr page for a few more pictures.) Please stop by the shoppe tomorrow between 2pm and 5pm to meet Neil and make God's Eyes with us!

Also, Neil has collaborated with jewelry artist Caitlin Clarke on a series of necklaces that are mini versions of his artwork! They are amazing and are only $28 at the shoppe.

Cover models

Yup, that's us on the cover of The Nest's summer issue! They sent a crew out to photograph us in our shoppe and our apartment a couple months ago, and here it is! It's crazy and totally surreal. The story is all about how we met, how we started the business and is filled with lots of DIY goodness. Hopefully the entire story will be viewable online soon!

Fun Stuffs!

We're super excited about the next show we've got coming up in the Shoppe. Artist Neil Freese will be gracing our space with a fun, colorful installation full of drawings, paintings, and perhaps even a little string art! We'll be celebrating the opening of the show in collaboration with ReadyMade magazine, which features Neil's fantastic God's Eyes on the cover of its current issue. Neil will be in the Shoppe on Sunday June 8th from 2-5 showing us all how to make our own. So please come join us, it's going to be a super fun, interactive, DIY and art extravaganza.

Also in the current issue of ReadyMade is a story I wrote about Conn & John of Cuckoo for Coconuts who are living large (and off the grid) on an amazing piece of property in Maui.
