Last Friday, a box containing some 1500 squirming ladybugs landed in our mailbox. They had been sent to us as a gift in honor of
Earth Day, and as a tribute of sorts to a friend and favorite artist of ours,
Charley Harper. Ladybug releases are a common Earth Day activity, as they are great enemies of aphids, and thereby great friends of your garden. We don't have a yard, so I called the
Alemany Farm, a lovely urban farm not far from our house. The farm manager Jason invited us down to release them and it turned into a lovely event with all the volunteers and staff gathering to ogle and set free all the lovely little beasties. I'm so glad we discovered the farm, I can't wait to get back there and get my hands in the dirt.
Huzzah! for ladybugs!
ReplyDeleteThe only 'bug' I will allow to crawl on me without getting too heebie-jeebie'd about it.
Did most of your ladybugs survive being in transit?
Where were they 'harvested', and don't you wonder how they feel now that they are citydwellers?
